- I'm nervous about ordering an at home sleep study over the Internet. How do I know that your company is legitimate?
We know that using the Internet to address health issues creates some anxiety so we want to address this upfront. Singular Sleep has been in business since 2015, making us the first company ever to offer home sleep studies and online sleep doctor consultations together. All communications with our company, including emails and form submissions, are encrypted and meet the highest level of security. We are accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and have won several awards in our field. We are a full-service, online sleep apnea clinic owned by a doctor (Dr. Joseph Krainin), not a company owned by business people that use inexpensive and poor-quality at home sleep studies as "loss leaders" to try to get you to buy CPAP from them. Our "competitors" like Lofta, ApneaMed, and iSleep are not accredited by the BBB and are not owned by doctors.
- I have seen cheaper at home sleep studies available online. Why is your at home sleep study more expensive than some other companies?
Choosing a company to perform your at home sleep study is a big decision. The testing fees are a considerable expense. But price isn't everything and you also want to make sure that you get a valid report with an accurate diagnosis. We know that what you're really looking for is value and we feel that we offer the best value on the market. We use the Alice NightOne testing device from Philips Respironics, the world leader in sleep diagnostics. The Alice NightOne meets the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommended criteria for home sleep study devices and is superior to less expensive tests like the Watch-PAT because it allows our sleep doctor to directly review your breathing data. The Watch-PAT simply generates a report that the doctor signs based on estimating abnormal breathing from changes in the diameter of finger artery. Our experience is that the Watch-PAT is not as accurate, and particularly not as good at distinguishing obstructive from central sleep apnea, as the Alice NightOne. The Watch-PAT also claims to measure your sleep stages but this is also just an estimate based on the frequency of your body movements during the night.
We have a "three pass" system that ensures that your report is highly accurate. First we have the study "auto-scored" by the Philips software system, which is about 50% accurate. Then the study is rescored by a registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT), the gold-standard in scoring. Finally, the data is reviewed in its entirety by Dr. Krainin, our board-certified sleep medicine doctor with over 12 years of experience in the field, who makes changes as necessary to ensure that the data is 100% accurate. Believe it or not, most of our competitors only use the auto-scoring feature! Then the doctor signs his name to the report without ever reviewing the raw data. Our process is more labor-intensive but ensures accuracy; this is why we are never going to be the cheapest option, but isn't your health worth it?
- Do you take me insurance?
Singular Sleep is a "private pay" provider - we are not contracted with health care insurers. Before you click away, make sure to do the math to see if you might come out ahead by using Singular Sleep. Many of of us now have high-deductible healthcare plans. You might end up owing $2,000-$3,000 to get an in-lab sleep study through your insurance. For less than half of that, you could obtain the at home sleep study, online doctor consultation, as well as a premium CPAP machine and mask through Singular Sleep. Make sure to get accurate quotes from your insurer before you get a sleep study through their preferred provider or you could end up getting hit with some high "surprise" bills. If you can't find out EXACTLY what you're going to pay, proceed with caution.
If you have Medicare or are a veteran, you might face a long wait to get help due to the inefficiency of the system. Consider Singular Sleep if you value your health and quality of life more than the money involved.
- What happens if I mess up the test or can't figure out how to use it?
We are there for you every step of the way to make sure that you do the at home sleep study properly. We provide extensive instructions on how to perform the test. If you have any questions, we have friendly, helpful representatives available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday to help. One of the great things about the Alice NightOne is that there's a button that you press in the morning which tells you if you got enough good data. We guarantee that you will get a valid sleep study report: if you make a mistake when doing the test, no worries, we can ship you another test for only the cost of shipping and handling.
- If I need CPAP, do I have to get it from Singular Sleep?
No! If you want our doctor to prescribe CPAP for you, you will need to have an online video appointment with him. The law requires that you meet with a physician in-person or via video for him or her to be able to treat you. We are aware that some of our "competitors" are illegally providing prescriptions with their sleep study reports. Do you want to get involved with a company that is doing things that are against the law and could be shut down at any time?
After the online video consultation, we can give you a prescription that you can use to obtain CPAP through your insurance or whomever you want.
